This program is a competitive admission program that requires a separate application. What Will You Learn - Curriculum Overview

With our Associate of Science in Nursing, students receive well-rounded knowledge and skills required to potentially secure positions in hospitals, clinical practices, nursing homes, home healthcare, or in military service.

This degree teaches core concepts needed to enter the career as a beginning practitioner of nursing. After successfully completing this program, students:

    • Advocate for patients and families from diverse backgrounds when delivering compassionate, equitable care that promotes inclusivity and well-being across the lifespan.
    • Apply the nursing process, nursing science, evidence-based knowledge, and clinical expertise when making clinical judgment decisions and managing care.
    • Integrate technologies and effective communication practices to support clinical judgment in all areas of professional nursing practice.
    • Use quality improvement strategies to effect change in the delivery of safe, effective care toward optimal patient outcomes.
    • Assume accountability for personal and professional behaviors that demonstrate the nursing standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct, considering the impact of determinants of health.
    • Collaborate with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team to contribute the nursing perspective in the management and coordination of patient care.

Admission to the Nursing Program

The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) is a 60 credit program that spans over 5 semesters designed to prepare the graduate to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for registered nurses and to enter a career as a beginning practitioner of nursing. Students first enroll in the Medical Assisting: Nursing Foundation program to complete the required prerequisites for the Nursing program application.

The Nursing Program is competitive admissions. Review the application and requirements carefully to understand how a score is calculated for entry.

Second start/Second Half Term Courses prerequisites will not be considered for entrance into the nursing program.

Transferring from another school? BRCTC does not accept any nursing credits from another nursing program.

Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a 9% increase in nursing occupations is expected in the next 10 years, adding about 194,500 new jobs each year. This two year program prepares students for entering nursing roles in hospitals, clinical practices, nursing homes, home healthcare, or in military service.
An Associate of Science in Nursing at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College provides a direct pathway to become a Registered Nurse in approximately two years after you are admitted to the program. Students are able to save time and money by beginning with an Associate of Science in Nursing. Students who earn the Associate of Science in Nursing are eligible to sit for the NCLEX examination upon successfully completing the program.

Students interested in the Nursing program must first apply for admission to Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. Admission requirements for Blue Ridge CTC include a high school diploma or equivalent & a complete application packet. Students who have earned credits at other Colleges or Universities must also provide official copies of those transcripts. There is also a $25 application fee that can be paid at any time after submitting the application.

The Blue Ridge CTC Nursing Program is a competitive admission process requiring a separate application to the program.

Students interested in pursuing the Nursing Program at Blue Ridge CTC first enroll in the Medical Assisting: Nursing Foundation degree. Once the necessary prerequisites are met, students are then eligible to complete the separate application for admission to the Blue Ridge CTC Nursing program.
Blue Ridge CTC Nursing associate degree programs do not require ACT or SAT scores to qualify for admission. Students may need ACT or SAT scores, or free placement testing to qualify for courses such as English, Math, or Chemistry. Placement testing can be scheduled at any time during the application process.
