Exclusively designed for the adult learner, the Board of Governors Degree gives students the flexibility to design their degree and earn it at a faster pace. By using a portfolio process, past work, learning, college, or military experience can potentially count towards college credits. Students upon completing the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Board of Governors will:

Have questions about the Board of Governors A.A.S. program? We can Help!

The Board of Governors program provides options for students to use prior learning and workforce experience toward a college degree. You may be able to fulfill some elective, interdisciplinary and/or general education courses by going through the Prior Learning Process (PLA) process. To be eligible for PLA credits, you must be an undergraduate student who has already been accepted into Blue Ridge and completed the admission process.
There is a submission fee and a fee per credit assessed applied to your program. The submission fee is $300, and the fee per credit awarded is $10. Application to the PLA process does not guarantee credits will be applied, so please read the qualifications carefully. Speak with your Academic Advisor about whether your experience can qualify for college credit.
There are two ways to qualify: Create a Professional Training Portfolio. This portfolio will include a description of an institutional or corporate training course, the date it was completed, number of hours of training and other essential information, such as a course description. The portfolio includes:

  • Resume and Cover Letter
  • Experiential Essays
  • Supporting Documentation
Posting of Credits for a recognized standard certification Certification credits are approved and awarded through program assessment by Program Coordinators.
Industry Experts and Subject Matter Experts determine the credit awarded. Resources such as the American Council for Education (ACE), Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) are used to determine guidelines for credit award in some instances. WVCTCS Policy and Standardized Award Processes provide guidelines for the Board of Governors degree.

Admission requirements to the Board of Governors associate degree program include a high school diploma or equivalent and a complete application packet. Students who have earned credits at other Colleges or Universities must also provide official copies of those transcripts. There is also a $25 application fee that can be paid at any time once an application is submitted.
Blue Ridge CTC does not require ACT or SAT scores to qualify for admission to an associate degree in the Board of Governors. Students may need ACT or SAT scores, or free placement testing to qualify for courses such as English, Math, or Chemistry. Placement testing can be scheduled at any time during the application process.
