Blue Ridge Community and Technical College JumpStart Welding Team participated in the Manufacturing Innovation Challenge: Build Out (also known as the MIC Build Out Challenge), hosted by Explore the New Manufacturing, and became a state qualifier.
The MIC Build Out Challenge pairs high school students with local manufacturers. This gives students the opportunity to design and construct a creative display or functional piece for their partner to showcase within or outside their facility or workplace. The display or piece is judged on design execution, visual impact, skill level, collaboration, and completion of requirements. Teams that meet their minimum requirements become eligible to compete for the state championship.
The JumpStart program is a collaboration between Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and local county school programs to provide high school students with options to begin their college experience while in high school, with discounted college tuition. Depending on their county, high school students can enter programs such as culinary arts, education, welding, and more. For more information about the JumpStart program, contact the Blue Ridge CTC High School Enrollment counselor at highschool@blueridgectc.edu.

The BRCTC JumpStart Welding Team was partnered with Kevin Wetzel, Sr. Project Manager at Logoplaste Tabler Station. The Welding Team constructed a creative display that was showcased at Logoplaste and later featured at the MIC Build Out Challenge’s Regional Awards Ceremony. The ceremony took place on April 27, 2026, at the Holiday Inn in Martinsburg. At the awards ceremony, it was announced that the BRCTC JumpStart Welding Team was a state qualifier for the MIC challenge. They were honored with a certificate at the ceremony.
