Radiologic Technologists take X-rays in various specialties and settings, including urgent cares, orthopedic offices, hospitals, mobile imaging companies, and inside the operating room. They also use specialized fluoroscopic equipment to examine multiple body systems in real-time using video images. Some radiologic technologists choose, with additional training, to specialize in additional fields such as Bone Densitometry, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT), and Vascular or Cardiac Interventional Radiography.

Developing a new degree of this type is a huge undertaking factoring in requirements and recommendations from the Higher Learning Commission, WV Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy Technology Board of Examiners, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), Blue Ridge CTC policies, our program advisory board and more. While we anticipate starting during the 2025/2026 academic year, there is no official start date at this time.
The Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology degree is a 60-credit program that spans 5 semesters, designed to prepare the graduate to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) initial certification exam and to enter a career as a radiographer*. It is intended that the courses in radiologic technology will provide students with an awareness of the value and dignity of patients and the skills to obtain diagnostic images in a variety of healthcare settings.
*Completion of this program does not guarantee you can sit for the certification exam or obtain employment after graduation. Please refer to American Registry of Radiologic Technologist’s (ARRT) website for full details including their ethics requirements. Additionally, state governing boards overseeing licensure may set specific requirements impacting your ability to work in their state. Please refer to the state board for the area you are interested in working in for more details.
Curriculum for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radiologic Technology
Suggested Course Progression
Pre-Admit Semester (Year 1 – Fall Semester)
*Students who completed Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2 (with labs) with a C or higher may be considered in lieu of this class. Please note that any anatomy courses taken more than five years prior to the Rad Tech program start date are not counted as part of the application.
First Semester (Year 1 – Spring Semester)
Second Semester (Year 1 – Summer Session)
Third Semester (Year 2 – Fall Semester)
Fourth Semester (Year 2 – Spring Semester)
Prospective students interested in taking courses towards this degree pathway should declare the following major: Healthcare Professions with a concentration in Health Sciences.
Please note prospective students who have completed or considering completing the general education courses prior to acceptance into the X-ray Technology program may impact their full-time student status throughout the program, potentially affecting financial aid. To maintain full-time status, students might need to enroll in additional courses alongside program-specific classes. Questions about financial aid should be directed to our financial aid office at finaid@blueridgectc.edu
In order to apply for the Radiography Program, students must:
*If transferring in credit from another institution, ensure the transfer evaluation process is complete prior to the application deadline. Transfer courses from other radiography programs will not be accepted.
**For decision-making regarding application scoring criteria only, midterm grades will be used for all required courses in which the student is currently enrolled. However, final grades must still meet the minimum requirements.
***Students who have completed Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2 with a “C” or higher may also be considered. Please note that any sciences courses taken more than five years prior to the program start date are not counted as part of the application.
Upon conditional acceptance to the program, students must:
^Successful completion of academic requirements and good standing with Blue Ridge CTC does not guarantee ethical standing with third-party entities. Credentialing boards, licensing boards, and other agencies requiring criminal background checks may deny employment or clinical placements based on findings. If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor for any reason, it is recommended to contact the ARRT for an ethical review prior to application to ensure eligibility.
The requirements set forth are the minimal requirements for acceptance and must be fully met for application consideration. The Radiography Program is selective entry and meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee entry to the program. Admission into the Blue Ridge CTC Radiography Program is contingent on both the applicant’s ability (using the minimum requirements noted above) and comparability to other applicants (using a set of scoring criteria). If there are more eligible applicants than there are seats available, applicants are ranked from the highest score to the lowest, and the top applicants are offered acceptance into the program. These application requirements are subject to change, and additional requirements may be added at the time of conditional acceptance.
In order to prepare for the TEAS, it is recommended that students:
