Blue Ridge Community and Technical College recently hosted a one-day “Exploring Careers in Animal Science” youth camp at the Morgan County Center, providing local high school students with an opportunity to explore exciting careers in animal care.
Ten students from the surrounding region spent the day learning from guest speakers, including Dr. Molly Potter, DVM, who spoke on the steps to becoming a veterinarian and introduced students to pet acupuncture and holistic medicine. Kerine Holcomb, RVT and Director of Veterinary Technology, outlined the path to becoming a licensed veterinary technician. Cat Collier, RVT and Animal Sciences Program Coordinator, showcased careers in wildlife and zoology—accompanied by her exotic rescue pets, including a blind turtle, a blue-tongued skink, and a python.
The highlight of the day was a hands-on suturing workshop where students practiced using real surgical tools. The event offered students a valuable glimpse into animal-related careers and the educational opportunities available at Blue Ridge CTC.
