Sterile Processing Technician Program

The Sterile Processing Technician with Externship Program is a total of 120-hours. This includes 80 hours for didactic (classroom training) and 40 hours for externship (lab experience).

Why Earn a Sterile Processing Certification

With the Sterile Processing certification, students will be able to perform and participate in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. These individuals work diligently behind the scenes to maintain the highest standards of infection control and patient safety. Sterile processing technicians are responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment maintaining the sterile processing areas, and receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment. After completing our program, students will be able to:

    • Explain the role of the surgical technician in the operating room and as part of the surgical team.
    • Explain proper infection control procedures and practices required in patient care and in the sterile surgical environment.
    • Identify the processes needed to effectively disassemble, clean, disinfect, inspect, reassemble, test, store, and distribute movable patient care equipment
    • Outline the standards required for a quality decontamination process
    • Identify the surgical instruments, equipment, supplies, materials, and medications used in general and specialized surgical procedures.

What You Will Learn - Curriculum Overview

This course provides an introduction to the surgical technologist career, role in the operating room, and foundational concepts. Course content includes medical terminology and anatomy and physiology foundations, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining generic and brand names drugs, understanding central service processing in healthcare facilities, microbiology and infection protection, instrument and equipment transport, cleaning, and decontamination and much more!

The Sterile Processing Technician program allows students to:

    • Follow proper infection control procedures and practices for patient care
    • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidelines that apply to the processing of medical devices and instrumentation
    • Understand basic factors in disease transmission and defenses against infection
    • Understand chemical disinfection functions
    • Understand isinfecting agents used in the decontamination process
    • Execute disassembly, cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, reassembling, testing, storing, and distributing movable patient care equipment
    • Prepare instruments sets, preparating basins and textile packs
