Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s Gaming Career Institute (GCI) provides up-to-the-minute, relevant instruction on all the latest gaming. Students learn the primary skills employers look for when hiring dealers along with the skills necessary to be successful interacting with players on the floor.

    Classes are held at the BRCTC Gaming Careers Institute located at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Introduction to Table Games is a prerequisite before completing additional games. The minimum age requirement for a Dealer is 21.

GCI Courses

Introduction To Table Games And Blackjack

    • Complete in two weeks
      8 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • Complete in four weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • 80 Contact Hours

This course begins with the general responsibilities of the dealer. Emphasis is placed on correct chip handling techniques, identifying the value of each color chip, learning to read the total value of a bet, and pit procedures. Continued with the fundamentals of dealing with Blackjack; card totaling, chip handling and cutting, card shuffling, and card placement. Attention given to game and accounting procedures, accuracy, and speed.

Novelty Games

    • Complete in one week
      8 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • Complete in two weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • 40 Contact Hours

This course covers a grouping of games considered “secondary” / “carnival” / “novelty” games. The category of these games can be extensive; the current games included are listed below. You will learn the rules of play for each game, standard poker rankings, calculating payout odds, and more.

  • Three Card Poker
  • Four Card
  • Let It Ride
  • Cajun Stud
  • Mississippi Stud
  • High Card Flush
  • Heads-Up Hold’em Poker
  • Ultimate Texas Hold’em Poker

Roulette

    • Complete in two weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • 40 Contact Hours

This course covers the fundamentals of dealing with Roulette. Emphasis on chip handling, table layout, accurate and quick mental multiplication, and accuracy in clearing the table.

MIDI-BAC/PAI-GOW

    • Complete in two weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • 40 Contact Hours

This course is designed to train students in all aspects of dealing with Midi-Baccarat and Pai-Gow. Students learn about the equipment used, the rules and object of the game, check handling and odds. Extensive hands-on training to assist students in mastering all aspects of these exciting games.

Craps

    • Complete in six weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
      120 Contact Hours

This course is for experienced table games dealers and covers the fundamentals of dealing Craps. Emphasis on the knowledge of the procedures on various bets, accurate and quick mental multiplication, and chip handling. Special attention to game procedures, accounting procedures, accuracy and speed.

Poker

    • Complete in two weeks
      4 hours per day, 5 days per week
    • 40 Contact Hours

This course covers the fundamentals of dealing Poker. Instruction in the fundamentals of rake/antes/blind bets, game rules and regulations, dealer’s responsibilities, and game security.

Tuition funding opportunities may be available to qualified applicants.

We have several opportunities for the course costs to be fully covered for those who qualify: the WV HEAPS Grant, the Blue Ridge Regional Work Opportunity Grant (BRRWO/WORC), or a tuition sponsorship program currently being offered through Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races for those who apply for a position. *These funding opportunities are subject to change. A student may also enroll and self-pay for the courses. The GCI team will work with you to complete applications for funding as needed.
Students must receive the Introduction to Table Games and Blackjack certifications in order to apply for a position with a casino. During a 4-hour class, this is 4 weeks. During an 8-hour class, this is 2 weeks. After receiving your certifications, you will apply for a position at a casino and processing times there may vary between 2-4 weeks typically.
According to BLS.gov, the average annual earnings may be $47,000+, however; casino dealers earn the majority of their income from tips and the earnings can even average $20-$30 per hour.
Often a starting position in this field will be a part-time job, focused primarily on evenings and weekends. You will have opportunity to increase hours, become full time, and promotions after experience and learning additional games.
Poker classes are a specialized course and are limited in availability. If interested in Poker rather than Table Games, please indicate that on the GCI Interest Form.
No. Any student that completes table games training will be certified in the games that they have learned. These certificates are recognized in gaming jurisdictions across the country.
