Eligibility Requirements

Applying to Ascend is simple…

Continuing Students are also eligible…

Continuing or transfer students are eligible for Ascend if they have 15 or fewer college credits (credits earned in High School will not be counted towards the 15 credit threshold) at the completion of the semester in which they apply to the program. Continuing students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or above (Nursing students must have at least a 2.5 GPA) and be able to take a full-time course load.

As an Ascend student you will be required to…

  • Enroll full-time (registered for 15 credit hours semester or as outlined on your selected programs academic map) with a 2.0 GPA(2.5 GPA for nursing)
  • Apply and accept any Financial Aid Award each year (Pell, WV Invest, etc)
  • Complete all English, Math, writing requirements within the first year
  • Meet with your academic advisor as required
  • Attend workshops and tutoring as required


Students must reside in West Virginia or in Metro servicing area to be eligible for the Ascend program. Metro Servicing Areas Include:

● Frederick County, VA
● Clarke County, VA
● Loudoun County, VA
● Frederick County, MD
● Washington County, MD
● Fulton County, PA
● Franklin County, PA

Financial Aid Filing

All students must apply for all federal and state financial aid every year as verified by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  WV Residents must also apply for WV Invests.  Students must accept any federal and state grant aid awarded (i.e., Pell, SEOG, and WV Invests). Only students who receive need-based aid and have a gap between tuition and mandatory fees and their financial aid award are eligible for the Ascend fee waiver to cover any gap need. Students who do not qualify for financial aid, but otherwise meet all other selection criteria may join Ascend; however, they are responsible for their tuition and fees. Ascend also supports students receiving veterans’ benefits.
