Research & Reference Lessons

The E-Learning department has developed lessons targeting students’ online research skills to enhance success in their research-related course assignments. A staff member is available to visit your class to deliver the lesson(s) of your choosing at the start of the term or right before a major research project.
Lesson materials and examples will be customized to your subject or assignment topic and can be reasonably modified to meet the needs of your students.

Lesson 1: Evaluating Websites

OBJECTIVE
Students will assess the credibility and relevancy of information sources found online.

DESCRIPTION
This lesson will help students to determine if resources they locate online are educational and pertinent to their project. Students will be made aware of how to analyze sources they wish to use in their scholarly work and will be provided a tool to evaluate websites for information. (This lesson is most effective when delivered in a computer lab.) Time needed: 60 minutes

Lesson 2: Understanding Plagiarism

OBJECTIVE
Students will identify types of plagiarism and practice citing sources of information used in an academic assignment.

DESCRIPTION
This lesson introduces students to the concept of academic integrity and underscores the importance of acknowledgment and citation practices. Students will review the different types of plagiarism, including specific examples, to help them avoid plagiarism in their coursework. Citation procedures will be covered and applied using both MLA and APA style samples. Time needed: 75 minutes

Lesson 3: Using Research Databases

OBJECTIVE
Students will locate scholarly reference materials using a research database and other web-based tools.

DESCRIPTION
In this lesson, a tutorial is provided to students on the use of the EBSCO Host or Lexis Nexis database. Advanced search techniques will be demonstrated in order to retrieve helpful and pinpointed results. Other key features of the database system will be covered to aid student research. Additionally, helpful web-based search engines will also be shown to students including Google Scholar and Google Books. Time needed: 45 minutes
