Prospective Students: Placement Tests

The purpose of placement testing is to determine whether or not you have the skills necessary to be successful in college level English and math courses. You cannot pass or fail placement tests. Your scores from placement testing will determine whether or not you will start in non-credit foundation ACFN English and math courses or college level English and math courses. You need to have taken placement tests or have submitted SAT or ACT test scores before you can register for classes.

ACCUPLACER is a computerized placement test for students who do not have SAT or ACT scores or has never taken placement tests. ACCUPLACER placement tests are untimed and adaptive. Adaptive means that there are not a set number of questions that you will answer. Questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions.

ASSET is a paper and pencil version of placement testing and is available for students who are not comfortable testing on a computer. ASSET placement tests are timed and have a set number of questions.  

Regardless of whether you take ACCUPLACER or ASSET you will be given four placement tests that will determine the following:

Reading Comprehension –

• Determines placement into ACFN – 095 Developing College Reading Skills or you may not need a reading class

Sentence Skills –

• Determines placement into ACFN-010 Introduction to Critical Composition or ENGL-101 Written English

Arithmetic & Elementary Algebra-

• The scores from both of these tests determines placement into ACFN-065 Pre-Algebra, ACFN-085 Basic Algebra or college level math

It is a good idea to prepare for placement tests. There is a packet of Sample Questions available for you to review. You may pick it up at the Front Desk A-07 or the Testing Center B-24.
