The Literacy Lab
WHO WE ARE

Did you know that:
- Low literacy skills impact a lifetime, limiting both career and college options
- Children who are not reading on grade level by the end of the third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school
- Over 6.5 million US children from birth to third grade are on track for reading failure

The Literacy Lab’s mission is to provide low-income children with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills, leading to greater success in school and increased opportunities in life.
During the 2018-19 school year, over 300 full-time tutors will serve in 100+ schools, impacting over 4,000 students across our 5 metro areas:

- Baltimore, MD
- Kansas City, MO
- Richmond, VA
- Springfield, MA
- Washington, DC

NOTE: While we are primarily recruiting for 2018-19, we do sometimes add members mid-year. Applications for the 2017-18 school year are also available on our website!

WHO WE LOOK FOR
We seek a diverse tutor corps who is:
- Excited to help close the literacy gap in high-need communities
- Interested in educational equity and/or social justice
- Dedicated to community service
- Conscientious about adhering to scripted interventions and assessments
- Receptive to incorporating constructive feedback from coaches and program staff
- Driven to uphold exceptional standards of time-management, ethics, and integrity

At minimum, all applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency
- Have served no more than 3 previous AmeriCorps terms
- Be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident legal alien

Unfortunately, potential applicants with DACA status are not eligible at this time.

Candidates MUST NOT be registered, or be required to register, on any sex offender registry.

HOW YOU’LL GROW
Before, during, and after service, tutors will:
- Receive training and coaching in effective, evidence-based strategies from literacy experts and school-based staff
- Access national Literacy Lab and AmeriCorps networks
- Have a foot-in-the door with local school systems

BENEFITS YOU’LL RECEIVE
Over the course of their service term, tutors receive:
- A modest living allowance; varies by region
- Baltimore, MD: $1,600/month
- Kansas City, MO: $1,300/month
- Richmond, VA: $1,400/month
- Springfield, MA: TBD
- Washington, DC: $1,600/month
Note: Allowances listed are pre-tax amounts. We recommend using a free online tax calculator to estimate your take-home income.
- An AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $6,000 for 1700-hour members
- Federal student loan forbearance
- Basic health insurance (premiums covered by The Literacy Lab)
- Childcare and SNAP assistance (if eligible)

WHAT YOU’LL DO
At minimum, a tutor must:
- Serve 40-45 hours/week; including:
- Normal school staff hours (e.g. M-F, 8AM- 5PM; varies by school)
- Required professional developments; trainings; community service, etc. (occasional late afternoons/early evening hours)
- Commit through the end of the program year (usually July 2018)
- Seize additional opportunities to serve your school and community (e.g. volunteering at a local library or food bank one evening/week, etc.)
- Implement ongoing feedback through regular observations by your coaches
- Adhere to a data-driven, scripted tutoring program
