Business & Technology: Office Technology

Degree/Hours to Complete:
Associates Degree; 66 hours to complete.

General information:
A student pursing an Associates of Applied Science in Office Technology must complete the requirements for the general education core and business core. The student must then complete the requirements for one concentration area.

With the exceptional growth being experienced in the Eastern Panhandle, well-trained administrative support personnel are essential for business and industry.  The Office Technology A.A.S. Degree provides students with the training needed for employment upon graduation.

Students completing the Associate of Applied Science in Office Technology will:

  • Understand and be able to demonstrate basic skills in writing, reading, math, and decision-making.
  • Possess skills in business ethics, office management, and basic accounting procedures.
  • Possess skills in communication, word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentations, publication design, and computerized accounting.
  • Successfully obtain employment within the administrative assistant field.

Concentrations/Specializations:
The Office Technology concentration prepares students for careers in management support in areas such as administrative assistants and office managers with an emphasis on computer skills, office technology and various computer applications. In addition to the core set  of Office Technology courses these students investigate Publication Design, Office Administration and Local Area Networking,  as well as have three electives in Office, Business and Technology to choose from.

The Medical Office concentration provides a comprehensive understanding of the skills necessary for work in physicians’ offices, insurance companies, billing companies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities. Knowledge of medical billing, collections, and reimbursement guidelines are necessary for successful employment in a health care office or facility. The five classes in the medical office concentration are usually offered in a block format together online. Students seeking this concentration must take this block of courses together when offered. This course block is generally offered once every two years opposite the legal concentration block of courses. The student and academic advisor will work together to ensure registration for the medical office concentration classes.

The Legal Office concentration provides a comprehensive understanding of the skills necessary for work in a legal environment. Knowledge of legal terminology, research, writing, and law are vital for employment in the legal field. The classes in the legal office concentration are only offered in a block online format similar to that of the Medical Office Block. Students seeking this concentration must take this course block as a single unit. This course block is generally offered once every two years opposite the medical concentration block of courses. The student and academic advisor will work together to ensure registration for the legal office concentration classes.

Students in the Office Technology Program are subject to the Community and Technical College’s requirements for admissions, basic skills testing, and appropriate course placement, including mandated developmental courses, which are not counted toward completion of the program. Blue Ridge CTC Catalog requirements regarding academic standards, student conduct, and graduation procedures also apply.

An internship in an office technology related area is required for graduation. Students are expected to locate their internship site. Detailed information of the internship requirements and expectations is available from the student’s advisor.
