Martinsburg, WV. Blue Ridge Community and Technical College Board of Governors met at the Main Campus in Martinsburg on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. The meeting was called to order at 11:59 am by Board Chair, Keith Unger.
Mr. Unger began the meeting by thanking Dr. Kathy Cox, Faculty Representative and Cassandra Long, Student Representative, for their service as members of the Board of Governors for the 2016-2017 Academic Year. Mr. Unger introduced Keisha Hicks, the newly elected Student Representative joining the Board for the 2017-2018 Academic Year.
Mr. Unger continued with the approval of the May 2017 minutes.
Dr. Checkovich continued the meeting with the President’s report, beginning with an overview of recent media stories regarding the College.
Dr. Ann Shipway, Vice President of Workforce Engineering Technology, provided the Workforce Development report, updating Board members on the development of a new degree in Drone Technology. Dr. Shipway also highlighted a partnership with the Jefferson County School Service Personnel for employees eligible for prior learning assessment opportunities with the College. Dr. Shipway completed her report with a review of funding secured by the College, which will be used for faculty development.
Mr. Justin Ruble, Vice President of Human Resources, presented a request to repeal Board Rule 42.1 Staff Work Shifts, Board Rule 44.1 Staff Development, Board Rule 45.1 Classified Employees, and Board Rule 46.1 Salary. Each of these Rules are no longer necessary due to the upcoming implementation of House Bill 2542 and forthcoming Rule replacements during the 2017-2018 Academic Year. The Board approved a motion to repeal the Rules.
Dr. Craig Miller, Chief Financial Officer, presented the Finance Report, which included an overview of the current FY 17 budget and proposed FY 18 budget. The Board approved a motion to adopt the proposed FY 18 budget.
Dr. Checkovich concluded the public session with a review of the 2017-2018 Board meeting schedule.
Executive Session was held. One public vote was made approving the contract for President Checkovich for the 2017-2018 Academic Year.
