Paramedic Students Among the Best in the State

Martinsburg, West Virginia (August 21, 2006) – Students from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College recently competed at the West Virginia EMS and Firefighter competition in Hurricane, WV.  Jeff Lewis, Amy Masser, and Yvonne See, who all just completed the Paramedic Program offered at Blue Ridge, competed in two events over the course of the weekend.

The first competition was CPR/Driving, in which they were judged on their ability to drive the ambulance through a standard Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC) obstacle course and on their ability to perform CPR in a moving vehicle. Eleven teams from across the stated participated in this competition and Blue Ridge’s team placed third.

In the second event, Intercollegiate Advanced Life Support, students were presented with a real life scenario to which they responded as if they were the team of medics coming off the ambulance.  This competition required students to think quickly and apply their knowledge and skill to be successful.  Proudly, the team from Blue Ridge placed first in this category.

“I’d like to congratulate these students on a job well done,” stated George Perry, EMS Coordinator of Blue Ridge’s Emergency Medical and Allied Health Division.  “They have given Blue Ridge Community and Technical College a lot to be proud of and helped reinforce our belief that our programs are a step above the rest.”
